When should I plant? Fall is the preferred season.
What size should the hole be for my plant? Your hole should be twice the width of the rootball and not quite as deep. The rootball should be slightly above ground level and then mulched.
How much should I water my new transplants? Make sure to water the rootball thoroughly!
When should I fertilize? We recommend a 50/50 mix of 10-10-10 & Cottonseed Meal sprinkled around the dripline. Always water after fertilizing.
When do I prune my hydrangeas? Spring blooming hydrangeas should be pruned after flowering, while summer bloomers can be pruned in late winter.
When do I prune my roses? If you have varieties like floribunda & hyrbrid teas then trim winter damage and shape before foliage emerges. Varieties like Knock Outs should be pruned in late winter or between flushes.
When should I prune and fertilize my holly bushes?
Prune in Spring and fertilize with Holly Tone.
What can I do to prevent Japanese Beetles?
What do I use to change the colors of my hydrangeas?
Use Lime to turn Hydrangeas pink, use Sulfur to turn Hydrangeas blue.
When can I prune Hydrangeas? Prune after they bloom for Spring bloomers, but you can trim Summer bloomers in late winer.
When can I prune Azaleas & fertilize? Prune & fertilize them after they bloom. Encores can be pruned in after they bloomed in the Spring. Fertilize with Hollytone for best results.
ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS
What is the difference between annuals and perennials?
Annuals only last for one season , while perennials will return year after year.
What is the advantage of annuals over perennials?
Though you have to replace annuals every year they will bloom for an entire season, while perennials will only bloom for a couple months.
When and what should I use to fertilize my annuals and perennials?
Fertilize annuals when you plant! You have the option of fertilizing weekly with a liquid when you water or granular fertilizer.
What is a good way to prevent weeds from my flower bed?
Use Miracle-Gro Weed Preventer to keep weeds such as clover and chickweed from reseeding in your garden. However, if you have perennials that come back from seed, like Coneflower, then don't use a pre-emergent. Landscape fabric can help suppress weeds too.
When do I cut back flowering bulbs?
Let the foliage turn yellow so it can recharge its nutrients and then trim back halfway.
I go on vacation and worry about my containers in the hot summer sun, what should I do?
You can use soil moist crystals to mix in with your potting soil to help retain moisture for longer periods of time.
How can I prevent weeds in my gardens?
Use landscape fabric. Also, Hi-Yield Weed & Grass Stopper.
I have aphids on my bedding plants and am not sure how to get rid of them. What should I use?
Use Malathian or a systemic insect killer.
What is the natural way to keep pests away from my vegetables without using chemicals?
Plant marigolds around your veggies to naturally ward off pests. Garlic will deter insects. Also, basil repels tomato pests.
How can I prevent tomato issues like Blossom-End Rot? Apply lime.
What should I do about the squirrels, deer and rabbits that are eating my plants?
Price Nursery carries I Must Garden products made in NC, which naturally repel these pesky creature.
What do I have, moles or voles?
Think of it this way, moles eat grubs (moles=meat) and voles eat plants (voles=vegetables). To rid yourself of these pesky rodents you can use the I Must Garden product. Also, plant your new plants in a mixture of soil and permatil.
When should I plant grass seed?
March, April or September. Preferably the fall!
How much grass seed do I need?
10# per 1,000 sq. feet for a new lawn and 5# per 1,000 sq. feet for an existing lawn.
When should I fertilize my lawn?
Fertilize your lawn in either the fall or spring.
How often should I lime?
You can lime every 3 years. Soil tests will you a more accurate answer. Price Nursery can help you read the results.

Do you carry bulk mulch or bagged?
We carry both.
Do you deliver bulk products like mulch, topsoil, & rock?
We do deliver. The delivery fee varies. Please call for details on pricing.

Will Price Nursery put containers together for me?
Yes, we would be happy to! Our knowledgeable staff will work with you to select from our large selection of plants for your indoor or outdoor containers! We also make beautiful centerpieces for any occasion you may have.
What do you charge to plant a container?
We only charge you for the plant material, soil and minimal labor fee to plant.
Can you tell me how much certain quantities will cover?
Below is a general listing of products and how much they will cover:
1 yard of mulch will cover 324 sq. feet approximately 1" deep
1 yard of topsoil will cover 150 sq. feet approximately 2" deep
1 bale of pine needles covers 45 sq. feet
1 bale of straw covers 1600 square feet
9 bags of mulch = 1 yard (same as 1 scoop on our loader)
What are some names of plants that can grow or survive with the roots emerged in water?
Bamboo, Spider plants and Peace Lilies.
What is the easiest orchid to grow?
The classic beginner orchid is the Phalaenopsis, which is known as the moth orchid.
I work in a small office with fresh air and very little light. What plant would do best to generate oxygen?
Spider plant, Wandering Jew, Pothos, Peace Lilly and Dracena.
Are there any houseplants that are good for people with allergies?
Houseplants like the Rubber Tree, English ivy, and Scheffelera.
What causes aloe vera plant leaves to turn brown?
Over watering. You can't reverse the rot, but you can take off the leaves from the stem, allow it to cure for a day and repot in quality potting soil (Fafard) that's well-drained.
What causes a clear gel substance to form on leaves of some houseplants?
What you are seeing is the excrement from aphids or spider mites on the plant. Wash the plant with tepid water or wipe off the surfaces with a wet cloth dipped in insecticidal soap. This practice is for hard-leaved plants. You must spray it as well.
