What to Do in the Garden
in September!

Lawn
Now is the time to aerate/plug (for beest results, ground needs to be moist), fertilize (with a slow release fertilizer), lime (if you did not apply lime in the Spring) and overseed your lawn.  Be sure to water regularly, DO NOT LET THE SOIL DRY OUT.  If working on a large or new area put straw on top to stop erosion & maintain moisture.

Trees & Shrubs
Do NOT Fertilize any trees or shrubs.  It encourages new plant growth that could be harmedc during the cold weather.  Fall is the BEST time to plant landscape plants, such as trees, shrubs, groundcovers, etc...  Keep Newly planted trees and shrubs watered and mulched for best transplanting success.  Fall is not a good time to heavily prune trees (sap is running) . Wait until December, expecially  for fruit trees.

Herbs and Veggies

Start planning your Fall garden Now! Sow pumpkins for Halloween.

Annuals & Perennials

Plant Asters, Pansies, Mums and Ornamental Cabbage & Kale to add color to your Fall Landscape!

Fall is a great time for planting perennials and fall blooming annuals.  Always check the root system before planting.  If the rootball is overgrown gently spread some of the roots so they will grow outward and not continue to grow in the shape of the container.  This will prevent the roots from girdling themselves and possibly killing the plant (this is also true for tree, shrubs and anyother container grown plants).  When planting cool season annuals apply  a slow release fertilizer to the soil and water throughly.

Divide any perennials that are overcrowded (this also includes bulbs, such as daffodils, etc...). Clean up any debris in the garden to help prevent disease nad insect problems next year.

Roses

Fall is a good time to plant roses and keep them well watered.  Be sure to stop fertilizing roses 6 weeks before the average first freeze date to allow new growth to harden off.
